Alvar Aalto - master of modernism
Held in the Barbican art gallery is the first UK retrospective of Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. His work being presented through the eyes of contemporary Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. Alvar Aalto has long been seen as one of the masters of modernism, and the exhibition also covers his wide range of product designs as well as examining his architectural style. Aalto admired the craftmanship and use of natural material found in Japanese architecture and this influence, some sixty years later, comes a full circle in the work of Shigeru Ban who was himself widely infuenced by Aalto. The show is a fascinating look at the themes that link these two visionary architects and is a must-see for any fans of modernism.
