A City of Blinding Lights
London, UK–Chic Today recently visited what has been described by Vogue as ‘the coolest art space in town’, the Riflemaker Gallery, to view the current Andrey Bartenev exhibition.
Last summer, Bartenev caused quite a stir at the annual Venice Biennale with his rainbow-coloured LED sculptures in the shape of Saturn, designed to express the theme of false promise of our networked world. The London exhibition features Disco-Nexion, inspired by this very installation, as well as a variety of artistic collages. For Bartenev, the theme of false promise is highly contemporary and is something which affects individuals everywhere from Tokyo to LA. “You can be very happy in a nightclub and have a lot of people around you, very happy, but you have no friends. You’re not alone, but you’re alone” explains the Russian artist.
This is certainly one exhibition unlike any other, puzzling yet at the same time one that challenges your artistic perspectives. Don’t miss it, head to the Riflemaker before March 11 2008. www.riflemaker.org
