Sugar-Coated Sunday…

My Sunday was as sweet as a nut-roast last week. After a lazy day of Bloody Mary’s and Botox debates, I found myself at the Sugar Hut (www.sugarhutworld.com), ringing the bell of a huge, wooden door reminiscent of days so far away I glanced over my shoulder in case Robin Hood jumped out of Fulham Forest to donate my Miu Miu and it’s contents to the locals.
Fortunately, a burly bouncer opened the door just in time to whisk me into a world that was very much in the present. Over-sized cushions allowed the casual clientèle to continue their Sunday lounging and the low lighting allowed under-eye bags from the night before to disappear.
I ordered a cocktail - but this is definitely a place where beer and wine wins. So if you go, grab your bottle and settle down with some delicious Thai tit-bits and prepare your ears for the real feast.
Performing live this Sunday was a sultry songstress, dressed in red and aptly named Scarlett. Her vocals took my garlic-and-thai-curry-flavoured breath away and pretty soon most of the punters had put down their satay-sticks and were nodding their heads to the harmonious hues they were being treated to.
Scarlett has a velvety voice which, whilst belonging to another era (that of truly decadent divas and their secret speakeasies) she can apply her versatile vocals to contemporary beats (provided by her talented backing band) from hip hop to soul jazz and make her own songs sound hauntingly familiar, yet simultaneously refreshingly new.
Rapturous applause rounded-off each song she sang and we all felt smug to have stumbled upon something so very special on a Sunday evening.
