Superheroes In Fashion!

Milan Fashion Week provided the first-ever glimpse of American Vogue’s Anna Wintour and designer Giorgio Armani sharing the stage with none other than a giant Batman.
The occasion was in aid of a press conference at the Teatro Manzoni to announce details of this year’s Costume Institute Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum, which will have Giorgio Armani as the honorary chair and Anna Wintour, George Clooney and Julia Roberts as co-chairs.
The theme of this year’s gala – otherwise known as New York’s ‘party of the year’ – might have been suggested by the presence of Batman: “Superheroes – Fashion and Fantasy”.
It may sound odd but superheroes have a significant impact on fashion and trends in real life; the iconic costume of cape, mask and bodysuit, are continually being referenced in fashion, along with designs inspired by female heroes such as Wonder Woman, SpiderWoman and CatWoman. The exhibition aims to reveal how the superhero serves as the ultimate metaphor for fashion and its fascination with an idealised fantasy body.
The gala will open on May 5th with an exhibition featuring more than 60 movie costumes, avant-garde haute couture, ready-to-wear and high performance sportswear. Some of the world’s best-known designers are lending pieces for the exhibition including Armani, Versace, Moschino and Dolce & Gabbana; Balenciaga, Thierry Mugler, Pierre Cardin and Jean-Paul Gaultier; and Britain’s Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Julien Macdonald and the youngest member of the London avant-garde tribe, Gareth Pugh.
Some featured outfits will include Nike’s “Swift Suit” and Speedo’s “Fastskin Suit” used to portray the nature of the superhero who possesses superhuman speed. Following the gala opening, the exhibition will be open at The Met from May 7th-September 1st; www.metmuseum.org
I can only wonder what Superhero Vogue Editor Anna Wintour would be…
