Perplexingly Marc Jacobs
I must admit, I am slightly bewildered by the perplexing turn which the latest Marc Jacobs/Victoria Beckham advertising campaign has taken. I certainly found the initial shots which began running at the start of the year rather amusing, featuring Miss Posh in quirky, doll-like postures emerging from oversized MJ carrier bags and shoeboxes.
As she recently told the New York Times, who interviewed her on the experience, “I knew this wasn’t going to be Vogue. I knew I had to put myself in their hands, which could be quite scary.” She had a long discussion with Mr. Jacobs after he first proposed the idea, last September, and a follow-up chat with Mr. Teller, who met Ms. Beckham’s misgivings with a typical mixture of charm and candor. “I told her, ‘You’re the most photographed woman in the world,’ ” Mr. Teller recalled. “ ‘And fashion nowadays is all about product — bags and shoes — and you’re kind of a product yourself, aren’t you?’ She was, like, ‘Uh, yeah.’ ”
But frankly I find the latest shot, with Miss Beckham curled up in a foetal position sucking her thumb, somewhat disturbing and verging on the ridiculous. And yes, as much as I support fashion campaigns which provoke and prod you into thinking (for a change), this is just, well…uh, yeah.
