Riding the Tea Pony

Natt Weller and Henry Holland

Tuesday nights can be trying. But this week all that I tried on Tuesday was not to have so much fun I wouldn’t remember any of it to write about…

The Hoxton Pony opened it’s doors to share the Shoreditch air with people you might not recognise, but you know you should. Really, I was far too taken by the curiously calming effect The Stoli Dolly cocktail was having on me (must’ve been all that camomile syrup) to take much notice of Jefferson Hack, Henry Holland, Natt Weller and other kooky-lookers (who quite aptly did turn out to be from the Kooks…oops).

However, after I’d double-dosed on a round of beef and parsnip pies I dutifully did the rounds and noticed that all the aforementioned personalities were looking particularly personable. Perhaps something to do with the laid-back, unconventional feel of this split-level, 400-capacity bar. Perhaps it was just all that Stoli.

Between the sea of bleached-blonde hair-spikes I spotted a familiar face tinkering with some tea-cups. Intrigued, I went to investigate.

Turns out that The Hoxton Pony serves cocktails in platinum-coated tea-cups which are served with sweet and savoury food on an afternoon tea-stand. Wow. The Ritz better watch out because this has got to be the best idea since cucumber sandwiches had their crusts cut off.

My almost-famous friend could have evidently done with a nice cup of Tetley, though. Making do with some carrot and coriander soup she managed to move her tea-cup-tangled toes to the tunes played by Jefferson Hack and even sounded sweetly serious when she asked Henry Holland where he gets his hair cut.

A very enjoyable night had by all – it was a shame Jas Shaw (Simian Mobile Disco)’s set ever had to end. My main gripe of the night was that, by the time the carriages awaited to take us from Hoxton to home, Natt Weller’s eye make-up was far superior to mine. His future is also set to shine much brighter than the big piece of bling I had worn for the occasion, so I may as well get used to the limelight (and MAC’s powerpoint kohl) loving him more. He deserves it.

The Hoxton Pony is located at 104-8 Curtain Road, EC2A 3AH

  1. That sounds like so much fun! This is the way it should be to read about these people and places - humourous but not horrible - you have a perfect style. I have read all the archive now - Cannot wait for more! Maybe i will see you for tea at the pony one day!!
