Raising A Mint At The Polo

June 9th, 2008 by Brina

You may think that the only time in your London-life when you will enjoy watching a polo match would be during late-night re-runs of Pretty Woman. That would mean you haven’t heard of ‘The Pro-Alvear Polo Match’ taking place on Friday 20th June at Ham Polo Club, where the riders are reputably so hot they would knock Richard Gere off his penthouse balcony, even in his good old days.

Sipping champagne and spying which of the world’s best polo players have the best behind, let alone the highest handicaps likely to be seen at a UK polo match, isn’t a bad way to raise money for a commendable cause – but this is just what you and your handsome hat will be doing.

Fundacion Pro-Alvear is an Argentinean charity founded to fund the economic, social and educational development of the Argentinean Pampas region. It has a track-record almost as impressive as that of its polo-playing supporters – improving local education, democratising new technologies and safeguarding the gaucho culture.

The polo competition will be between teams sponsored by Automat Brasserie and The Cuckoo Club – both sophisticated venues on the London scene who are used to winning when it comes to fine food and classy entertainment. It will be interesting to see who translates their skills to be supreme on the green!

German-born London socialite Timo Weber is The Cuckoo Club’s Director of Development and promoter extraordinaire who became infamous for his humourous tag-line – “a dictatorship at the door, a democracy on the dance-floor”. He is enthused about the night, enjoying doing something for a good cause whilst ensuring the crowd creates the perfect party-vibe. He is helping to organise this extra-special event with a social committee that would make any polo prince proud.

Alexander de Rothschild, Alexandra Spencer-Churchill, Andy Wong, Boris Becker, Caprice, Eva Herzigova, Julien Macdonald and Daniella Issa are just a few of the fantastic members of the committee – most of whom will be cheering loudly from when the complementary bar opens at 8pm until the carriages arrive at 2am – yep, it’s an all-nighter!

With the bar, the match, the canapés and light supper provided by Automat, the surprise auction and the all-night DJ – this might just be the best money you spend all summer with tickets costing £100 for gentlemen and just £50 for ladies – from which all profits will be donated to the Fundacion Pro-Alvear.
