Uber-Stylish Hair In LA

In celebration of the long awaited Sex And The City movie, I found myself in search of a stylist to copy the sleek, shiny, new look of the one and only Sarah Jessica Parker. How did they do that to her locks? Her hairstyle changes almost as often as her Manolos. There are ads are all over with her sporting a new colour and look, each one ravishingly sleek and gorgeous (although one of those naughty guy magazines voted her on the least sexy list last year–well, at least she has one indisputable sexy attribute…her hair!)

Having beautiful hair, in great condition with vibrant colour is something many of us dream of. Most people admire the long lustrous tresses of famous movie stars and only dream about having shiny, healthy hair with luscious body and luminescent color. From Jessica Simpson to Jennifer Aniston, Cindy Crawford to Heidi Klum, they all have one thing in common…a great hair stylist! OK, so they probably also have a team of full-time beauty assistants à la Cleopatra that cater to their every need. And of course, those magic hair extensions.

But finding the right hair stylist for us everyday-chictoday addicts can be quite puzzling. And finding the right stylist is essential, because choosing the right hair colour for your skin tone is just as important as the right make-up.

As discovering and writing about the latest gurus of beauty is what I do best, one would assume I would have it easy. Well…not really. In fact, my hair looks like SJP’s after a late night spent smoking and drinking in some oversexed downtown Manhattan dive at 2 am.

So I recently found myself doing the unmentionable (especially for a style and beauty reporter): searching on the Internet for OPRHS-other people’s recommendations of hair stylists. After some extensive net surfing, I discovered a top-rated individual on Citysearch named Ali. With a name like Ali, you’ve got to be a winner! Even better, his salon is located on Robertson, but south of Wilshire and way down past the stalking, street-crazed paparazzi that are perennially front of the Ivy.

Here are some online reviews that got me pointed in his direction:

“Before moving to L.A. last year, I had some excellent hairstylists in Santa Monica, Scottsdale and New York, and Ali is the best by far.”

Ali is professional, skilled and considerate

“Ali is a highly skilled colorist and stylist. He corrected my color and restored my hair to a soft, healthy shine.”

And what do I think?

Well, finally, I love my hair color again! The salon is so low key, without the attitude problem so prevalent in the trendy salons further up the street. When gas prices are almost $5 a gallon here in LA, some star stylists are charging 100 times that for a haircut and blowdry! It’s comforting to know there exists a hair stylist who is professional, makes me happy and doesn’t make me pay for his haute Rodeo Drive rent and help him fill up his Hummer!

And even if you don’t live in LA, you now have the perfect reason to hop on that plane! Isn’t your hair worth it?

Pros: Conveniently located, highly skilled, personable, reasonable prices

Cons: Street parking
