There used to be a popular TV game show in the States called The Dating Game. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this campy game show, it involved the contestant asking a series of questions to each of their three potential dates (hidden behind a screen), and use their answers to decide who they would go out with. The elimination of all physical characteristics, with the exception of the sound of a voice and their responses, were the only tools that were at the contestant’s disposal.

What always amazed me, when I used to watch that show as a young girl, was the initial reaction when the screen would lift and the two laid eyes on each other for the first time. Most of them could not hide their reactions, and you either saw relief or disappointment. The question I get asked a lot of times is: does appearance really have to matter all that much? Sorry ladies and gentlemen, there is no getting around it. The outward appearance does matter.

For men, they are highly visual creatures. However, what surprises most women, is that their definition of beauty varies greatly. Some men look carefully at details. Detail-oriented guys may look at these as clues into a woman’s personality. For example, a woman who always keeps up her appearance could radiate self confidence. It could reflect a healthy self love and a balanced perspective. There is a sense of order about her.

The real question is, how much should appearance matter? We can’t help it. There has to be that initial spark,a spark that reflects the physical attraction between two people. As a society, we are driven to make assumptions about the style of clothes, the accessories that are worn, and the trappings of the material possessions a person has. It is a fact, however, that most people judge you within 5 seconds of meeting you, and you only have one chance to make a good first impression.

So take the time to take care of yourself. Get that pedicure you have put off and smile. You never know, you could just be smiling at your future.
