The Art-à-Porter of Marina Calamai

This may look like an ordinary (albeit scrumptious) cake. But look closer, because this is in fact a hat created by the talented artist Marina Calamai. Part of her collection of art-sculptures entitled Art a Porter Sweet Hats, these are made of treated cloth and plaster painted over with oils, transforming the ordinary into the unconventional. Marina began painting cakes and all things sweet when, during her pregnancy, she was diagnosed with temporary diabetes. Yet although her works’ subjects are delightfully yummy, she uses her creations to express a much deeper and significant meaning:
“Many of her works are made up of several elements that are put together, and yet can have a life of their
own…the fact that the sweet is finished slowly, that to behold this event we have to turn our eyes and physically move from one point to another hints at the necessity for a pause, not only physical, but rather psychological; this pause allows us to enjoy a moment to ourselves, to regain a velocity that is possible, that is ours”
For all you lovers of sweetness and unbound creative talent, this is certainly one artist that is worth discovering…
