The Art Of Bob Dylan
Woman In Red Lion Pub 2007 © Bob Dylan
Think of Bob Dylan, and you will probably recall some of his most legendary songs such as ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’ and ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’. What many do not realise is that in fact, aside from being one of the most prolific and controversial singer-songwriters of the past fifty years, Bob Dylan is also an actor, radio broadcaster, film director and painter. His talents are limitless and his versatility boundless.
The essence of his free spiritedness is captured by the brush-strokes of his sketches and paintings, an extensive collection of which is currently on display at the Halcyon Gallery in London’s refined Mayfair. Within the light and airy rooms of this glorious, recently opened space, The Drawn Blank Series exhibition assumes a life entirely its own.
It is the first time in the artist’s lifetime that such a vast and comprehensive collection of his artwork has been assembled, and as you wander through the gallery, the sense of glittering creativity that pervades the air is truly palpable.
Both the style and content of Bob Dylan’s paintings speak of the ‘disconnectedness of [his] life on tour’, portraying the nomadic, disjointedly sporadic aspects of his soul in a manner so very different to that of his songs. His bold use of colour and marked strokes are reminiscent of Picasso infused with fragments of Matisse.
‘I don’t concoct drawings out of my head. It’s all out there somewhere and that’s the only way I can work or get any satisfaction out of doing it…’
