Fetish by David Lynch and…Christian Louboutin!

I am deeply concerned, as I left this piece of news pass unnoticed so far. A perfect example of how fashion can become art (or, if you prefer, how art can become fashion) was exhibited at the Pierre Passebon Gallery in Paris earlier this year. On display was an intriguing visual collaboration of two artists that you wouldn’t ordinarily imagine working together: filmaker David Lynch and shoe designer Christian Louboutin.

Of course, Mr Lynch is no stranger to the fashion industry, having successfully directed the “Gucci by Gucci” perfume commercial in 2007. However this specific project is far from one that may be characterized as a commercial one. Provocative yet extreme shoes were combined with the equally extreme and artistic erotic vision that Lynch’s photographs express.

Louboutin’s creations are considered by the fashion world works of art in their own right, however he decided to pursue his fetishistic vision further by creating “series that are more sculptural than wearable.” Here enters David Lynch and his mastery in photography (and fetishness, as reflected in the exhibition’s title “Fetish”), capturing fragments of naked female bodies in a purely sadomasochistic sense, all enhanced by excellent lighting and cinematic techniques.

As Christian Louboutin remarked: “The models wore these unwearable shoes with natural grace. Their very white skin, very dark eyes and bright mouths melded with Lynch’s aesthetics. As is his habit, David Lynch made it into a décor populated with shadows.”

Of course, we didn’t expect anything less from either of them. But looking at the photos again, I can’t help but think of how great an influence Guy Bourdin continues to be for visual artists years after his death.

Louboutin and Lynch collaborated on five sets of shoes and five sets of prints are now waiting for collectors to purchase–although the exhibition is now by far over, make sure you pick up your piece of creative history quick.
