I’ve never been a fan of the original Star Trek series–I’m more of a Next Generation kind of guy. Throw anything with Patrick Stewart my way and I’m happy. So when the news came out that Star Trek as we knew it was being re-imagined for a new generation (two Star Trek puns in one sentence…It’s embarrassing really…), I wasn’t that interested.
And then things started to get leaked. This upcoming film is being directed by J. J. Abrams, the genius behind Cloverfield, but unfortunately also the brains behind Lost. Very little could be learnt from the teaser trailer when it was released earlier this year. A few images of the Enterprise wasn’t going to draw in anyone but the most hardcore of fans.
However, when the cast was announced, the situation improved quite drastically. Eric Bana and Winona Ryder have jumped on board (probably to remind the world that they still exist), and there are some rather random but well cast roles in the form of Simon Pegg as Scotty, John Coo (of Harold and Kumar fame) and Zachary Quinto (Sylar from Heroes. You know, the scary looking one.)
I can’t believe I’m actually saying this about something based on the original Star Trek series, but it’s all looking rather promising. I feel a little dirty after saying that. But what with a well chosen cast, an action packed trailer and some rather sexy posters that have just been released, I really just can’t help but be excited about it. It’s a little while to wait though. 8 May 2009 to be exact. But it might just be worth it.
